Corporate Disaster Relief: Strategic efforts to rebuild and strengthen communities

Helping communities rebound from a traumatic event or natural disaster requires multi-level and cross-sector effort. There are immediate needs to be met—such as trauma support—and in the case of extreme weather events—food, water, and shelter. To make the most of their disaster relief programs, corporate citizenship professionals must partner internally and externally to make the best possible use of all available resources, from community involvement efforts like corporate giving and volunteering to more operational activities like security, logistics, and supply chain management.

Disasters, no matter what their scale, have economic ramifications in addition to the social and environmental consequences. According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, wildfires, floods, droughts, and other natural disasters were responsible for more than a trillion dollars in economic damage in 2015 and that number is only expected to increase as climate-related natural disasters become more frequent.

Reflecting on the season of giving

HiRes.jpgThe holiday season is upon us, and with it comes an increased focus on corporate giving initiatives. From localized donations such as food and toy drives to broader efforts like the annual #GivingTuesday campaign, companies are ramping up their corporate giving programs.  As our calendar year comes to an end and many are moving into new budget cycles this spring, it is a good time to assess your giving strategy and make sure it is designed to maximize both social and business value. All giving is good AND you can increase the effectiveness of your company’s giving program by employing the resources and capabilities unique to you, addressing the causes most relevant to your business operating context, and mobilizing your employees. If you activate your program on all three of these fronts, you will make an impact that continues well beyond the holidays.

Nonprofit board training: Preparing and engaging employees for service

Nonprofit board placement programs have grown in popularity and importance as companies and employees realize the rewards of sustained, high-level engagement in community organizations. According to the 2015 Community Involvement Study, nearly 70 percent of companies offer a nonprofit board program to their employees as a part of their volunteer program offerings (see Figure A). This is a huge change from 2011, where the same study revealed that only 26 percent of companies offered nonprofit board programs to all of their employees.

Jessica Allen, standing, is an Elizabeth Dole Foundation Fellow, serves as caregiver for her husband Charles, and holds down a job with the Yellow Ribbon Fund. While serving in Afghanistan, Charles stepped on an IED and everything changed—he became a double amputee. The Elizabeth Dole Foundation is one example of the nonprofits supported by USAA and The USAA Foundation to help military caregivers with programs that promote their emotional well-being and financial empowerment.

With a new comprehensive corporate citizenship strategy, USAA sharpens its focus to increase positive impact on military families and local communities. In 1922, 25 Army officers in San Antonio, Texas, joined together to insure their automobiles because they had difficulty getting insurance due to their high-risk professions. These officers formed an insurance company to help protect one another—an association based on trust and the bond of military service.

From that humble beginning, the organization has grown to become a leading brand for customer experience. Today, USAA serves more than 11 million military servicemembers and their families with insurance, banking, investments, and financial advice. The organization’s corporate citizenship focus through the years had been broadly focused and mostly oriented toward its San Antonio hometown.

This support is imperative to the success of CSR initiatives. Corporate citizenship professionals are increasingly expected to quantitatively demonstrate the impacts of their programs to measure the results of company investments in both the business and social arenas. By evaluating and measuring their programs, corporate citizenship professionals can establish the value of their efforts and obtain the data necessary to continually improve programs—and also gain executive buy-in.

Schwab as his successor as president of Carnegie Steel. Schwab had started as a low level engineer at the company and first impressed Carnegie with his talents as a pianist at a party. This jump-started a close mentoring relationship between the two, and in a relatively brief period of time, Schwab was groomed to follow Carnegie as head of the company. Schwab’s business success even after he left Carnegie Steel is largely credited to Carnegie’s interest in his high-potential protégé.

December Corporate Citizenship Highlights

The holiday season is a great time for corporate citizenship, as companies and consumers come together to give back to the communities in which they live, work, and do business. During December, CSR practitioners have been called upon to organize countless corporate giving and volunteer initiatives, with impressive results. Just a few weeks ago, companies rallied to gain support for #GivingTuesday, and saw a whopping 36 percent increase in donations. Some companies, like Center member Microsoft, stepped up their game by matching donations benefiting Microsoft Youthspark, a company-wide, global initiative that aims to create opportunities for 300 million youths by 2015.

CSR Professionals Give Back on #GivingTuesday

Giving Tuesday The third annual #GivingTuesday is happening on December 2, 2014. Started in 2012 by New York’s 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, #GivingTuesday is working to institutionalize a day of giving back. According to a Guidestar report, more than 50 percent of nonprofits receive the bulk of their contributions during the holiday season. More than 70 percent of these annual charitable gifts in the United States come from individuals.
