Corporate Disaster Relief: Strategic efforts to rebuild and strengthen communities

Helping communities rebound from a traumatic event or natural disaster requires multi-level and cross-sector effort. There are immediate needs to be met—such as trauma support—and in the case of extreme weather events—food, water, and shelter. To make the most of their disaster relief programs, corporate citizenship professionals must partner internally and externally to make the best possible use of all available resources, from community involvement efforts like corporate giving and volunteering to more operational activities like security, logistics, and supply chain management.

Disasters, no matter what their scale, have economic ramifications in addition to the social and environmental consequences. According to the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, wildfires, floods, droughts, and other natural disasters were responsible for more than a trillion dollars in economic damage in 2015 and that number is only expected to increase as climate-related natural disasters become more frequent.

Video is quickly becoming the media consumption format of choice for consumers and business executives around the world. A recent study by comScore, shows that 100 million people watch a video on the internet each day. Even more impressive is research from Cisco that states by 2019, online video will be responsible for nearly 80 percent of global internet traffic, an increase from 66 percent in 2013. According to the latest published census in 2014, 19.6 million out of the total 319.2 million Americans are veterans. These men and women have not only sacrificed a great deal defending our country and the freedoms upon which it was founded, they have also accumulated a great many skills and qualities which make them outstanding options as civilian employees. Yet—while their discipline, leadership abilities, and technical skills are widely lauded—military veterans that have served since 2001 have an unemployment rate higher than the national average, one that soars to a staggering 21.4 percent for those between the ages of 18-24.[1]

Giving Tuesday The third annual #GivingTuesday is happening on December 2, 2014. Started in 2012 by New York’s 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation, #GivingTuesday is working to institutionalize a day of giving back. According to a Guidestar report, more than 50 percent of nonprofits receive the bulk of their contributions during the holiday season. More than 70 percent of these annual charitable gifts in the United States come from individuals.

According to the Center for Civil Society Studies at Johns Hopkins University, more than 70 million people work and volunteer in the nonprofit sector.
